Afghan Eyes

by - 9:34 PM

It was an Afghan's eyes that once captivated the world
Sharbat Gula
She stopped Time
But went on with her life never hearing a word
Got convicted of crime
For wanting a home and that was her reward
A gift given to our generations from the war
We had to leave our beloved Kabul for Lahore
With hopeful eyes we always leave open our door
We welcome the poor
Anybody who rings our bell
Give them all that we have in store
I don't know if you can tell, but
We know loss too well
To make others dwell

When you steal our mirrors and sew them on your clothes to sell
May they reflect to you our blood, our living hell

Afghans

Look into my eyes and explain what a threat we pose
Tell me about how these pain filled eyes are what we chose

I'm telling you nobody really knows
These eyes hope for nothing more than those beautiful Afghan meadows
For the fathers and brothers who were killed while lined up in rows
The mothers whose sons were bulldozed
The widows who got labeled as whores

These eyes have hope for my people, for those
Who I wish I could gather to sit with me in a field filled with roses

These eyes will keep hoping, I suppose
